The case of the disappearing potatoes!

Summit, along with two of his wonderful caretakers from Yakima Humane Ellensburg Shelter, went to visit Ms. Willette and her fourth graders today! 🐾 Ms. Willette's fourth graders are reading the novel Shiloh and learning about empathy and compassion towards animals as well as how to advocate and care for them! 📚 We are so thankful for Miss Olivia, Miss Mackenzie, and Summit for coming to share their love and knowledge of animals and for inspiring our students to make a difference! This fourth grade crew is already brainstorming ideas of how to help at the shelter and are planning to make adoption posters to help the animals find their forever homes 🥰 They wanted us to tell you: 📣 "Go adopt Summit! He is the best!"
The frost was coming quickly so our elementary students went to the garden to harvest the rest of our tomatoes for the season! Dr. Robert Pritchett came to Thorp yesterday to meet with 5th grade and 3rd-5th grade multi-age students to discuss a variety of occupations related to the field of health sciences. Dr. Pritchett works for CWU as a professor with research focusing on thermoregulation, perception of sweat loss, and hydration. He has been a part of CWU since 2007! Thorp students were fantastic knowledge seekers; participating in the discussion with questions and utilizing their active listening skills to broaden their knowledge of community partners, all while thinking about possible future goals for their health and the health of others 🙌🏻
Thank you Dr. Pritchett for sharing your morning with us yesterday!
Ms. Willette's 4th grade class spent their morning in the garden helping Mr. Thompson harvest carrots! They dug them up, cut off the greens, and washed em up. They also were awarded "chef's privilege" and got to eat some of their bounty!
🥕 "I can't wait to eat these since we helped harvest them!" -LP
🥕"I didn't know so much work went into getting carrots ready for us to eat!" -ET
🥕"Our school is the best ever!" -EW
🥕"Can we eat one? or five?" -RS
They were able to prepare just around 19.5lbs of carrots grown by our students! 🙌🏻
Homecoming Spirit Week is this week!!
Be sure to check it out and show your school spirit!
The first Friday of every month, upper elementary students buddy up with lower elementary students for "Reading Buddy" time! This is a great time for students to showcase their reading skills to one another and to foster relationships across grade-levels!

A huge congratulations to our very own, Jessica Hoff, for receiving the high honor of:
Citizen Educator of the Year!
This is what our community partners from Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife had to say:
"Jessica is an enthusiastic and engaged educator who has frequently reached out
to Habitat Program staff over the past year. Jessica has developed lessons and
taught her elementary students about roads and their impact on wildlife
connectivity, habitat fragmentation, the importance of urban planning, and why
native plants are an important part of our landscape. She is also heavily involved
in Thorp School’s outdoor garden classroom, which includes a nursery, a fruits
and veggie garden, a pollinator garden, and a nature trail. Jessica has welcomed
Region 3 Habitat Program staff into her classroom as guest speakers, and has
sought feedback on ways to further improve her high-quality lesson plans.
Jessica’s dedication and passion for outdoor education is inspirational. The young
students that she teaches are lucky to have such a passionate educator who sees
the value in nature-based education, and takes the time to connect her lessons to
the natural world directly surrounding the school. Her hands-on approach to
teaching has resulted in engaged students who not only look forward to their
outdoor education time, but also are developing a deep-rooted appreciation for
natural resources which will last throughout their lives."
We are blessed by Mrs. Hoff's presence and impact on our students and staff! Congratulations Mrs. Hoff!
Congratulations to our secondary students of the month for September!
